I was looking at a rare book auction, and there was a book by the famous author and evangelist C. S. Lewis. Inside on the title page is an inscription in Lewis' hand that reads. "A. C. Harwood / ex dono auctouris / June 1937." The auction house says it translates to "from the author."
How close are they?

That's a good translation. An alternative would be "as a gift from the author" or "gifted by the author".

Note that auctouris should actually be auctoris.
