I find the "emperor" designation a little silly; whether he's real or not, he was a usurper rather than an officially recognized emperor, whose career seems to have exactly followed a pattern paralleled by tons of other figures in the 3rd century (general successfully fends off enemies at the border, gets proclaimed emperor, either gets killed by the reigning emperor or kills him and becomes officially recognized).
