I think I would had preferred to transliterate through Greek Пу́тин > Πúτην > Pýtēn, -is (acc. -a).

Were there any Ancient or Mediæval convention to transliterate Cyrillic to Latin?
Or to transliterate Cyrillic to Greek?

I don't know, but a more phonetic transcription seems preferable to me.
