The first meaning of the noun is... interesting.

It’s not as bad as it seems, apparently it is derived from the more general meaning of whatever or whomever you can find refuge, help, rest, solace, etc. with, (hence the basic meaning of resting place), so chiefly your wife, but it can also refer your family and friends. According to LL.
